And that’s why we’ve put together a Game of Thrones travel guide for all fans to explore Croatia. After all, why pay for a city tour when you can discover everything on your own?

Explore King’s Landing

For any Game of Thrones fan, the walled city of Dubrovnik should be the first stop on any journey of discovery to Westeros. While Malta was the original setting for “King’s Landing” in season 1, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms was moved to the much more fitting Dubrovnik in season 2.

The world-famous “Pearl of the Adriatic” is located in the Dalmatia region of southern Croatia. Even if your visit to Dubrovnik is very short, no one doubts it: this fortified city, with its location right on the sea, its rugged cliffs, imposing city walls, and iconic terracotta roofs, was the perfect filming location for King’s Landing.

Dubrovnik’s 16th-century old town is crisscrossed by narrow, winding streets, perfect for the Lannister intrigue.

Stradun

Stradun is the main street in Dubrovnik’s Old Town, running directly through the city center from Pile Gate to the Old Port. Stradun is unique because it is built entirely of white marble. This street features prominently in numerous scenes with the inhabitants of King’s Landing from season 2 onwards.

Jesuit Staircase

You probably remember this distinctive street from the scene in season 5 when Cersei Lannister (played by Lena Headey) performs her “Walk of Shame”. After being convicted of adultery, she has to walk past angry citizens with her head shaved and completely naked, as they hurl insults and spoiled food at her.

The Jesuit staircase, directly in front of the Dominican monastery, also served as a backdrop for scenes in seasons 2 and 3. Due to the monastery’s uncompromising stance regarding public nudity, negotiations ultimately resulted in costs of $50,000 per day for filming the “Walk of Shame” scene.

Ethnographic Museum Rupe

The Ethnographic Museum, a former 16th-century granary and another filming location in the Old Town, was used for scenes in Littlefinger’s brothel when Oberyn Martell (played by Pedro Pascal) meets Tyrion Lannister (played by Peter Dinklage). But the museum is also a great, well worth-visiting place to learn more about the people, cultural history, and heritage of Dubrovnik and the surrounding region.

Gradac Park

This pine grove outside the Old Town was the filming location for the “Purple Wedding” in season 4, in which King Joffrey (played by Jack Gleeson) dies a gruesome death after being poisoned. Gradac Park is a wonderful place for a stroll, where you can soak up the magic of Dubrovnik and enjoy the superb views of the city.

Rector’s Palace

The Rector’s Palace was formerly the palace of the city administration of Dubrovnik. It can be seen from the middle of season 2 onwards, when Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) visits the trading city of Qarth and asks the Spice King to provide her with ships, but is refused.

This beautiful building houses a cultural history museum where you can learn more about the history and culture of Dubrovnik from the time when it was still called the Republic of Ragusa and was ruled by a rector.

Minceta Tower

The Minceta Tower is the filming location for the House of the Undying in Qarth. In the season 2 finale, Daenerys attempts to free her stolen dragons here. The tower itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a well-known landmark in Dubrovnik. Its construction took almost 150 years – not surprising given its 6-meter-thick walls.

Lovrijenac Fortress

Lovrijenac Fortress, commonly known as the “Gibraltar of Dubrovnik,” served as the filming location for numerous scenes in Game of Thrones, most notably as the Red Keep. While the exterior of the Red Keep was computer-generated, the fortress’s interior provided the perfect backdrop. You might recall some scenes from Season 2, such as King Joffrey’s name day and the “power is power” confrontation between Cersei and Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen). Lovrijenac Fortress is located outside Dubrovnik’s western city walls, where it stands 37 meters above sea level.

A bay at the foot of the fortress of Lovrijenac was used as the filming location for the scene of the murders of King Baratheon’s bastard children by the Gold Cloaks in season 2.

Bokar Fortress (Zvjezdan)

The main purpose of Bokar Keep, built in the 15th century, was to protect Pile Gate and the bridge from attacks from the west. The keep makes its Game of Thrones debut in season 2, when Tyrion and Lord Varys (played by Conleth Hill) plan the defense of King’s Landing against Stannis Baratheon (played by Stephen Dillane).

Pile Tor

The Pile Gate, located between Bokar Fortress and Lovrijenac Fortress, is the main entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Numerous scenes have been filmed both inside and outside the Pile Gate. Scenes outside the gate are best known as “Blackwater Bay,” for example, when Myrcella Baratheon is sent to Dorne to marry Trystane Martell. Or later in season 3 when Shae (Sibel Kekilli) and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) see the ships sailing past King’s Landing, or when Littlefinger and Sansa plot Sansa’s escape from the city.

The uprising in the Red Keep after Myrcella’s dispatch in season 2, in which King Joffrey is insulted and human feces are thrown in his face, was filmed on the inside of the Pile Gate.

With an individual yacht charter or charter with skipper from Dubrovnik, you have easy access to all Game of Thrones locations in Dubrovnik.

Split (15 SM from Marina Agana)

Split, which primarily serves as the setting for additional scenes in King’s Landing, is located on the Dalmatian coast and is the second largest city in Croatia. Other scenes filmed in Split include those featuring Daenerys and her heroic deeds in the city of Meereen.

Split, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a fantastic destination on any Croatian sailing trip, boasting a wealth of unique buildings, tombs and towers, stunning bays, and fresh seafood. The city is particularly easy to reach by boat, car, or plane.

Diocletian’s Palace

In the catacombs of the 1700-year-old Diocletian’s Palace in the center of Split, Daenerys keeps and trains her dragons in season 4. Here, the slaves also discuss participating in Daenerys’ rebellion against the masters of Meereen, and it is the filming location for her throne room.

The palace, built in the 3rd century, covers 30,000 square meters and is considered one of the world’s oldest and most impressive Roman ruins.

Klis Fortress

In the town of Klis, not far from Split, lies Klis Fortress, also known as the city of Meereen, where Daenerys fights in season 4 to free the city’s slaves and “answer injustice with justice.” Follow in Kahlessi’s footsteps and hike the rocky path to the summit, but always be on the lookout for any dragons that might be flying freely. From Klis Fortress, you also have a fantastic view of Split.

Trogir

The Dominican monastery in Trogir, just 6 nautical miles from Marina Agana, was another filming location for several scenes from Qarth. Trogir’s old town is an oval island situated between the mainland and the larger island of Čiovo. The town is incredibly picturesque, with a seafront promenade and numerous attractions such as palaces, churches, and towers.

Kaštel Gomilica

Kaštel Gomilica, located between Trogir and Split, is one of the seven Kaštela (or fortress) settlements. Some of the exterior scenes of Braavos in season 5 were filmed here, such as the scene where Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams) sells oysters from a cart. Kaštel Gomilica lies 17 nautical miles east of Marina Agana.

Žrnovnica

The small town of Žrnovnica, located even further east of Split than Klis, was used in season 4 for the bathing scene of the Unsullied and Missandei, Daenerys’s advisor/maid.

Locations in Krka National Park

Krka National Park was frequently used in season 4 for shots of western landscapes. Here, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls intertwine to create some of the most beautiful scenery in all of Croatia. The breathtaking Krka Waterfalls are also located here.

The Krka River, located 6 hours north of Split by sail, is 73 kilometers long and covers an area of ​​more than 2,000 square kilometers.

Old Town, Šibenik

Šibenik, known as the “Royal City,” served as the backdrop for Braavos, one of the Free Cities in the series. Šibenik’s Old Town made its Game of Thrones debut in Season 5, when Arya arrives in Braavos searching for the House of Black and White.

Šibenik is located 31 nautical miles from Marina Agana and is a great place to enjoy traditional Dalmatian cuisine and stunning scenery. A visit to Šibenik wouldn’t be complete without seeing the four fortresses built to protect the city: St. Nicholas Fortress, St. Michael’s Fortress, St. John’s Fortress, and Šubićevac Fortress.

Cathedral of St. James, Šibenik

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the setting for the mysterious, multifaceted House of Black and White, where Arya arrives in season 5 in search of Jaqen H’ghar. The cathedral’s facade is particularly unique, as different faces are depicted all around the building. Therefore, it is the ideal filming location for the temple of the multifaceted god.

The Cathedral of St. James combines architectural styles of the Renaissance and Gothic, making it a truly remarkable highlight of Šibenik.
