Marina Agana Travel Information & Planning Guide

UTC/GMT +1 hour

1st of January 2023 the official currency for the Republic of Croatia is Euro. You can exchange money at the departure airport, but the exchange rate is often better once you are in Croatia. Visa and Mastercard are accepted in larger restaurants, marinas, supermarkets and at the base, however, it is advisable to have cash as many places are still unable to accept credit card payments.

Please note: bases are unable to accept cash or personal checks, and cannot give cash back on credit or debit (Switch/Delta) cards.
This base cannot accept cash, American Express or Diners Club. Visa and Master Card are accepted.

Tipping in Croatia is expected at all service-providing venues and considered polite. 10 % – 15% in restaurants and bars is considered polite, but mostly it is done based on customer satisfaction.

For a Sunsail skipper, a gratuity is expected and is typically given to the skipper at the end of the charter. The amount is entirely at your discretion.

There are a number of car hire companies operating in Croatia. There are a couple of major car rental companies at the airport. If you’re looking for a car rental to drive from the airport to Marina Agana, Avis, Budget and Hertz are located at the airport.

Some agencies offer a delivery service to the marina for a small fee. Please inquire with reception for further information.

If you would like to hire a car, please make sure to bring all parts of a valid driving license.

Parking is available at Marina Agana for clients arriving by car for 60 EUR per week (120 EUR for campers) and must be arranged and paid for at the main reception desk locally.

Marina Agana can be reached by ferry from several locations in Croatia and Italy. During the Croatia sailing season (April to September), daily ferry connections operate between Italy and Croatia, including routes from Ancona and Pescara to Split. The journey from Italy to Split takes approximately 9 hours by ferry.

Level 1

• At least 9 days and 100 miles as skipper on an equivalent size yacht
• Level 1 destinations offer the easiest cruising grounds with line-of-sight navigation. Lazy line mooring or mooring balls are common.

Experience levels are based on sailing conditions and the length of passages within your chosen sailing area. View here for more information.

Croatia has mandatory sailing requirements for bareboat charters.

There must be at least one certified skipper on board who is over 18 years old. The skipper must be competent in handling a yacht in close quarters, anchoring and mooring in varying conditions, and using navigation and pilotage skills to safely the day’s sailing and know your position at any time

The skipper must hold:

• A valid sailing license or certificate issued by a government or state-approved organisation.
• A valid VHF Radio Operator’s License.
• The original license/certificate, which must be presented at the base during check-in.

To sail in this destination, you’ll need at least an ICC, RYA Day Skipper, ASA 103, US Sailing Basic Coastal Cruising, SLC, IPC, or an equivalent higher-level qualification may be accepted, provided they appear on the Croatian Ministry’s approved list.

A list of officially accepted licenses is available online from the Croatian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and is updated regularly. The list is organised by country and specifies the certificates accepted for different competency levels, vessel sizes and sailing areas.

Please refer to the official Croatian Ministry list before contacting the base with license-related queries. Note that if a license does not appear on the official list, it is not accepted for bareboat chartering in Croatia.

All skippers must bring their original, valid licenses and VHF certificate to the base in order to take over the yacht. Please note that charter bases in Croatia are not authorised to approve licenses that are not listed by the Croatian Ministry of the Sea.

The skipper’s time is booked from 12pm-12pm in 24-hour periods. If you have reserved a skipper for the first day of your charter and have a 6pm start, he or she will use this time to ensure they are happy with all aspects of the yacht and will be at the base to meet you upon your arrival. If you’ve reserved a skipper for a later date on your charter they will start at 12pm on that day.

The skipper is responsible for the safety of the yacht at all times. They are not permitted to dive with you, nor leave the vessel overnight. He or she must conduct a safety brief with you before leaving the dock regardless of the duration of the contract with you.

For “check out charters” (anything less than the full duration of the charter) the check out skipper’s time is booked from 6pm-6pm to allow for a meet and greet in the evening and go over basic systems, then a full day with you the next day.

The skipper is required to give you a thorough briefing on all aspects of the yacht and dinghy in addition to assisting you with planning an itinerary for the trip and advising you how to contact the base, the return to base procedures and the emergency assistance procedures. We suggest that you attend the scheduled chart brief that will be supplemented by the skipper during his or her time with you on the yacht. We also suggest that you make it clear exactly what you want to cover: anchoring, docking, etc.

The skipper fee does not include food or beverages for the skipper and this is your responsibility. We suggest that you discuss this on the first day with your skipper and establish whether you’ll provide cash for meals, whether you’ve included him or her in your provisioning or whether you’ll accommodate him or her as part of the group for meals ashore.

The skipper must have his or her own cabin. We prefer not to put the skipper in the bow due to the shared head and size of the cabin. If you expect your skipper to stay in the bow, please let us know well in advance so that we can choose the appropriate (small) skipper.

For one-day check out skippers, it’s your responsibility to get the skipper back to the base. If you prefer not to come back to the base you must pay all expenses (ferry, taxi, etc.) to get him or her back to the base.

Gratuity and industry expectations
A gratuity is expected and is typically given to the skipper at the end of the charter. The amount is entirely at your discretion.

Boarding Time
Your boarding time is at 6pm.

Please note customers boarding at our standard Sunsail 6pm boarding time will only sail out the following morning.

The chart briefing for this base is available online, so please view it before arrival, the link to is found as a task in your MyAccount. Additional consultations for further questions and reservation assistance are available at the base on Saturdays at 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm and 5:00pm local time.

For those who have booked an Early Boarding, you are free to sail out as soon as your chart and yacht briefings have been completed and you’re ready to depart, just make sure you’re safely moored before sunset, as night sailing isn’t allowed. Feel free to ask one of the chart briefers for a good mooring spot within your sailing reach before sunset.

The base personnel will wait for you until 7:00 pm. After 7:00 pm, you will find a letter at the reception door with a message indicating your yacht’s name and berth. Your boat will be open and there will be a sign on board with your name. The boat’s equipment will be ready for the night. The base personnel will be at your disposal the next day from 8:30 am and will then handover the boat to you.

You are required to be back at base by 5:00pm the night before disembarkation for a debriefing. Disembarkation is at 9:00 AM the following morning.

Provisioning
All provisioning orders should be placed no later than 7 days prior to the charter start date. Visit store.sunsail.com to order. Please be mindful of the cut-off date before submitting your order.

For more information, explore here for our different provisioning options.

Coolers
All Sunsail catamarans are equipped with cool boxes. Only one cooler is available per boat.

Mobile phones
Check with your service provider for information about cell coverage in this region. Using your own GSM mobile phone in conjunction with a prepaid SIM card is also very popular and convenient. All Sunsail yachts have WiFi Internet options on board, so please ask at the reception for more details.

Music + iPods
All of our yacht’s stereo equipment have Bluetooth connectivity for our guests to use.

Electricity
The standard voltage on all yachts is 12 volts, and 220V sockets are 2-pin European style. There are also plenty of USB sockets throughout the yachts’ interior. The base also provides adapters, however it is also good to have your own if you need multiple. All our catamarans have a generator, so 220VAC is available while plugged into shore power, and while the generator is running.

Learn more about what’s included on your yacht.

Entry, exit, and visa requirements depend on the locations you are departing from and traveling to. You are responsible for having the correct documents so make sure to check with the consulate of the countries you plan to visit before you travel. Visit travel.state.gov for the latest information.

EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES)
The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new digital border registration system for non-EU travellers visiting Schengen countries for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Instead of relying on passport stamps, the system will electronically record each entry and exit, including biometric data (such as fingerprints and facial images) for first-time registration.

For our customers, travelling to our Mediterranean destinations, this means slightly longer processing on first arrival as details are captured, but faster and more streamlined border crossings thereafter. Please allow for plenty layover time to account for any delays.

The EES is designed to improve border efficiency, enhance security, and more accurately track permitted stays across participating European countries.

Learn more here: What is the EES? – EES

The base has storage facilities for your bags while waiting for the yacht, or while you are waiting for your transfer once your vacation has come to an end. The storage area is lockable, however, please note the bags are stored at owners’ risk, and the base is not responsible for any loss or damage.

Please pack using soft-sided bags, as these are easier to store on your yacht. Pack lightly and review our suggested packing list below for required and necessary items to bring:

• Pack essential prescription medicine and change of clothing in a carry-on bag*
• Passport and other travel documentation
• Tickets and paper confirmations for pre-planned activities
• Light-colored, light-weight clothing
• Formal wear for upscale dining establishments
• Swim wear and cover up
• Hats and sunglasses
• Sandals and flip-flops
• Athletic shoes and hiking boots
• Travel-sized toiletries and hygiene products
• Bug spray and OTC pain relievers/ointments such as motion sickness relief
• 12V DC to 110V AC power inverter (for boats without generators**)
• 12V to USB power adapter for charging mobile devices

*We would highly recommend packing prescription medicine and essential clothing (swimsuit, t-shirt and shorts) in your hand luggage as occasionally your luggage may arrive at the base after you do.
**All boats include a 12V DC outlet (a “car” outlet), and more recently USB sockets are in place of the 12V plug. Boats with generators have 110V outlets in the Caribbean and 220V in the Mediterranean and Exotic locations.

As a yacht skipper in Croatia, you are required to have an official sailing license as well as a VHF radio license. Original licenses/certificates must be presented upon check-in at the base.

Mooring fees are payable at all ports in Croatia. Prices vary depending on the size of your yacht and the type of mooring. Approximate mooring prices can be viewed for each Croatian destination independently in the base’s eGuide DESTINATIONS section and can vary from 40 EUR a mooring ball in a small, lonely bay for a monohull, to 370 EUR for a popular marina for a catamaran.

There are a brilliant number of different mooring options in Croatia: Marinas, Town Quays or Harbors, Mooring Buoys and Anchorages. It really couldn’t be easier to moor up and explore the beauties of the Dalmatian Coast!
Anchoring is possible almost everywhere, but please don’t anchor where you see an UPSIDE-DOWN ANCHOR because it means no anchorage is allowed.

Mooring buoys are either owned by a restaurant, in which case you are expected to dine with them (just call ahead and make dinner reservations in order to book a buoy), or they are under concession, which means you have to pay for your stay. If you anchor closer than 300m from buoys or harbors under concession, you will be charged the same fee.

Town quays or harbors are NOT the same thing as a marina. They are cheaper, non-reservable, cash-only facilities and they DO NOT use VHF 17 for contact upon approach. Some have their own frequency, but most of them operate on line of sight and on a first come, first served basis. Much like marinas, most of them have water, electricity and shower facilities, but are much more affordable in price.

The most wide-spread brand of marinas in Croatia is the Adriatic Club International (ACI). All of the marinas in Croatia respond to VHF ch. 17 for communication upon arrival.

A security deposit must be paid at the base by Visa or Master Card and is refundable at the end of your charter IF THERE ISN’T loss or damage TO THE BOAT AND EQUIPMENT and provided the yacht is left in a good seaman’s like condition. To significantly decrease your security deposit, purchase our Yacht Damage Waiver insurance ahead of time.

Croatia is generally risk-free of contagious disease. Current travel, health, and safety information can be obtained by visiting travel.state.gov.

Sunsail offers comprehensive travel insurance for your complete peace of mind. If you have your own travel insurance, please make sure that it covers all of the destinations and activities of your Sunsail vacation. View our optional extras for more information.

*Please note country entry/exit and vaccination/immunisation requirements can and do change. Sunsail is not accountable for these requirement changes and we advise visiting the destination’s authority website to receive the latest updates.

Swimming is often a fun and important part of a vacation. However local rules, flag systems, currents and where swimming may be permitted, can be different and vary from country to country. Snorkel vests, Life Jackets and Diver Down flags are all available on board.

Children

• Talk to children about water safety at the start of a vacation, making them aware of the potential dangers.
• Accidents can happen at any time on vacation, but often they happen on the first and last day, so keep watch and do not get distracted when your children are playing by, or in the water.
• Children in or near water should always be supervised by an adult and never left unattended.
• Get in the water with them, it is easier to keep an eye on them as well as good fun. Floatation devices are highly recommended for children but are not a substitute for supervision.

Be aware of your surroundings

• Check warning flags and signage on the beach and only swim where it is permitted.
• Beware of dangerous currents, these can be very powerful. Not all beaches have lifeguards and/or warning flags.
• Beware of underwater hazards, such as reefs, rocks, sudden changes in depth and marine life.
• Never swim where a sign says not to e.g. in zoned areas for jet boats or jet skis.
• Never swim at night or after drinking alcohol.

Look out for others

• Never swim alone, ‘buddy up’ with others in your party and use the snorkel vests provided.
• Know how and where to get help. If you see someone in difficulty; raise the alarm, preferably the emergency services. Ensure you know the correct number for the country you are in.

Do not overestimate your ability

• Even if you regularly swim in a pool, remember that open water swimming can be very different.
• Consider swimming lessons before you go if you think it would be useful to learn proper swimming technique.

All yachts are equipped with adult life jackets, harnesses, snorkel vests & diver down flags. You can see all this equipment demonstrated in our online safety briefing, and we strongly recommend that you make use of this equipment during your vacation. This safety equipment will be displayed in the saloon of your boat on boarding – If you have any questions feel free to ask our base staff during your briefing.

We have a very limited supply of children’s life jackets on base so highly recommend that if you are traveling with children, you bring their own. This ensures that children have correctly fitting jackets that are comfortable for them.

Children should not be allowed in the dinghy without a life jacket or buoyancy aid and should wear a buoyancy aid or harness whilst on deck. Children under the age of 16 should not operate an outboard engine and should be supervised at all times when in the dinghy.
