I had sailed on and off for many years (always with a skipper) and had taken my Day Skipper theory course as a student 34years ago! Now, with retirement approaching my partner and I decided it was time to complete my day skipper course and for her, having never sailed to take on the competent crew course. I retook my theory course with Sunsail’s partner Prometheus. This was challenging but well structured and I completed it the week before. So my theory was fresh but my boat handling very rusty and riddled with bad habits.
We chose Sunsail through family recommendations and for the fact that they could offer a private shower/toilet ( heads) . As it turned out each cabin had a private heads so privacy was not an issue. We met our fellow trainees, a couple from Canada and a new to sailing young woman and our fears of sharing with ‘strangers’ were dismissed almost immediately. As we quickly became firm friends and hugely enjoyed each other’s company both during the busy learning on board and in the evening. Each supporting and complementing each other’s learning.
I would like to save the greatest praise for our instructor Tadeusz ( Tadek ) He is a young man with the wisdom , knowledge and ability of someone much older. He has a calm and friendly nature and excellent teaching skills. He was patient with the newbies and firm when needed. He is also relaxed and fun company. I am sure he has a very bright future.
We had initially planned to do the course in Greece but Croatia proved a beautiful and ideal location and if you are there in June listen out for the nightingales as you rest at anchor in the a beautiful bay and watch the sun go down. -
My wife and I just returned from a weeklong charter with Sunsail / The Moorings in the BVI. Our original 46 foot monohull from the Moorings became unavailable due to damage a couple of days before our charter, but the booking team substituted an identical replacement boat from the Sunsail fleet at the last minute.
Our captain, Will Stewart, was the highlight of our trip. With training from the British military and the Royal Yachting Association, he was the perfect captain for us. I wanted to re-acquire my long dormant sailing skills, and by the second day Will turned our charter into an extended sailing school, which is exactly what I was hoping for. A natural teacher whose high standards inspired us to perform our best, Will had us handling most aspects of sailing the boat by the end of our charter.
In addition to his patient instruction, Will coordinated all the details necessary for us to enjoy our trip tremendously, from itinerary planning, to provisioning, to reservations on the nights we dined ashore. On the nights we cooked onboard, Will was a delightful dinner companion for my wife and me.
My wife and I are already planning to come back, this time with friends. We were lucky to have Will as our captain and guide this time, and we will make sure he is with us the next time we sail here.

Our family had a fantastic time in the BVI onboard our Sunsail 424 for a 5 day charter. It had been 30 years since I sailed here (in my single days) and I was excited to share the BVI adventures with my family. From arrival to departure, Sunsail’s customer service was exceptional! Of course, I knew 5 days wouldn’t be enough but my plan work, my family is hooked on sailing vacations and already talking about another Sunsail adventure next year!

Great location and yacht. Flotilla holiday made the sailing a lot more relaxing owing the competence and support of the flottila crew, which advised on the places to stay/stop overnight, and ensure that we had a berth. Finn, Eleanor and Carraig were great.
-
All aspects of trip from booking, to asking questions, to checking in and checking out went very smoothly. We’ll be back before long.

From the moment we booked with Sunsail, everything was very easy. Becky responded to our emails very quickly, was knowlegdable and made arrangements for taxis etc seamlessly. On arrival at Agana the reception staff were very helpful, we could leave our bags and wondered off to have a leisurely lunch. We were lucky to get access to the boat early, a cheerful welcome message with contact details was in the cabin. We met Tadek our skipper and trainer a short while later for a quick introduction. There are too many high points to go through our weeks experience with Tadek, we had the most brilliant time with him and had the most brilliant instruction from him. We started as 2 potential Comp Crew and ended with 1 Day Skipper and 1 Comp Crew. We were ectastic. It is probably the best holiday we have had as a couple in a very long time. There was a sister boat running a day skippers course and we had the pleasure of meeting them and Michael, the Lead Instructor who was also so knowledgable and very encouraging and positive. I cannot extend our thanks enough to Tadek, for a brilliant, brilliant week. It was such a pleasure to meet you. We did the course in preparation for a sailing trip with friends that is booked for June via Sunsail in Greece, island hopping. We are very much looking forward to this trip. Overall we had a fabulous experience thank you to all involved.

Simply the best. We had from start to finish an outstanding experience. Great place, superb sailing, excellent Sunsail crew – Finn, Jesse, Becky – could not have been more welcoming, helpful, and their skills and warmth made for a great time for everyone. Loved the freedom to sail all day and explore, while coming together in beautiful harbours each evening. We will be back!
-
Fantastic in every regard. The captain they provided was just the best! A great sailor, so knowledgeable, and so much fun and friendly. (Thank you Ana!). The boat was perfect – new and everything functioned well. And the BVI’s are just the most magical place to sail. The staff at Sunsail was so helpful and friendly. Highly recommend Sunsail and the entire experience.
-
We had an awesome time on the flotilla sailing around Croatia. The lead crew were great, really helpful, friendly, knowledgeable. They made sure everyone had a really good time.
-
First time in the BVI and loved it. The people were lovely as was the food. I have to say that much as the yacht was in perfect condition, it was infested with cockroaches which is inexcusable to me. How can a yacht be handed over like that? I found food quite expensive as well, but none of this detracted from the amazing time we had.
-
I had sailed for years and finally took the RYA five-day skipper course with Michael, the instructor. This was an unforgettable experience. Michael is an extraordinarily knowledgeable and experienced sailor. He demonstrated patience and provided skilled teaching guidance. Revise the course before you go! Michael continually tests your knowledge, which is needed to apply it to the practical course on the boat. It’s hard work but worth it! Sunsail made it very easy for me in the booking process, answering my questions and explaining every detail. I passed and have since sailed with joy and confidence.

The flotilla was the right call for us as we had never been here before. It took the stress out of finding a dock, getting there in time and getting around the harbors. The sun, weather, winds were wonderful. We never motored. Provisioning was a short walk. The food, sights and people were amazing. We all (8) had a memorable experience. Made some friends on the other boats. I would come back here and do this all over again in a hearbeat.

This was our 2nd nine-day cruise around the BVI with Sunsail/The Moorings. Each time we’ve hired a Captain. Our 1st time the Captain was just “Ok”, this trip our Captain, “Rico” was awesome. Rico is engaging, knowledgeable, helpful, and a pleasure to have on the boat. If you need to hire a Captain, we highly recommend you request Hendrico Vivier [Rico] you won’t be sorry 😊

Fabulous week. The boat was presented excellently, in great condition and spotlessly clean. The handover was very efficient and the technial briefing conducted efficiently with plenty of opportunity to ask questions or seek clarification. Most impressive was the lead crew on the flotilla. They were always smiling and could not have been more helpful. The morning briefings were comprehensive and highlighted any possible challenges we might encounter. We did not have any major equipment issues during our sailing trip, but technician Ella was always ready to help wth anything that arose. The flotilla participants gelled quickly and a good social atmosphere developed during evenings together. All the overnight moorings were handled well and the lead vrew were onhand to give assistance if requested.

I took the Day Skipper course with Amy as our instructor. I cannot recommend the course and Amy highly enough. The course is very well organised, providing us with lots of practical experience in all sorts of weather in the best sailing spot in Europe. Most of all it was Amy who made the difference. She is not only very experienced, but also a highly talented teacher and leader. A+ experience overall.

I took part in a day skipper course last week having previously completed the competent crew course in June at the same place. I travelled solo and was joined on the course by one couple and another solo traveller along with our instructor, Michael. There were two of us doing the DS course and two doing the CC course. I arrived at Marina Agana on Saturday pm and after meeting my instructor and the other solo traveller we boarded our 47 ft yacht, Anegada which had 4 cabins and 4 heads (bathrooms). The course started on Sunday am with a detailed health and safety and yacht briefing. We then sailed for 4 nights/5 days travelling to Drvenik Veli, Solta, Brac, Hvar and Split before returning to Marina. This included 4 hours night sailing as part of the course. The weather was variable but we had good wind most of the time and some testing conditions. The yacht was quite old c.10 years and was being retired (sold) from the fleet at the end of the season but it was a good yacht to learn on. Unfortunately the windlass for the anchor broke on our trip and had to be replaced by Sunsail’s maintenance team. This caused some delays to our schedule as we waited for them to come out to us and source the replacement etc. Michael kindly agreed to extend the course into Friday ( until c. 1:30pm) which was planned to be a ‘free’ day and his day off, to complete the syllabus.
The boat was well provisioned by Sunsail and Michael for the whole week for breakfasts, lunches and the night sail dinner. On other evenings we went ashore to eat in the local restaurants.
The DS course was full on with passage planning required on one or two evenings as well as the night sail until 1:30am. Despite the physical and mental challenge it was a great experience. I successfully completed 13 out of 14 modules and will return early next summer to complete my DS course and obtain some more practical yacht sailing experience as even if I had passed in full, I still feel I need more experience under the guidance of an instructor before chartering a yacht on my own. I can’t recommend Sunsail and my instructor Michael highly enough. They are excellent in everything they do. Michael is very sociable, is passionate about sailing and a great instructor. Patient, assertive when necessary -
Hvar flotilla 21-28.09.24
First time sailing with Sunsail and it definitely won’t be the last.
All the shore staff and especially our lead boat crew were fantastic.
Our yacht was spotless and we only had one minor issue with our traveller which we repaired while sailing.
All the overnight stops were excellent and information from our hosty Imogen was very useful for finding great places to eat.
Our lead crew skipper Michael was brilliant, with 9 boats in the flotilla he was always calm and professional.
The engineer Carrig was fun and although we didn’t really need him he was always entertaining to chat with.
Overall from the complimentary 1st day breakfast to the g&t party, cocktail competition and final group meal the lead crew were always fantastic.
Croatia is a beautiful place to sail and I have been with two other companies before, none compare to Sunsail. -
The flotilla in Croatia was an amazing! We’ve been catamaran sailing as family several times now, but this was a whole different experience! Each night in a new town, on the quay, surrounded by old architecture and vibrant villages, with a selection of restaurants just a stones throw away. Then days of free sailing with mountains in the distance and hillsides dotted with stone homes and towns- picture book views. We met so many fun and interesting people in the flotilla. Michael the skipper had an amazing way of always being positive and encouraging- no matter what. Carrig the tech guy was calm and confident, and Imo was totally in control despite her spirited demeanor. Highly recommend.

This was my first experience of a flotilla and it was amazing! Despite challenging weather conditions, including a day locked in at the marina. The Sunsail team were always professional, knowledgable and fun! Elle was always there to make sure we had what was needed and make reservations, Luka the technical lead was always on hand and, oh my word, how good a captain was Tadek, a young man with a great future ahead of him. Thanks everyone you made my first experience a memorable one.
