Setting Sail with Confidence: An Interview with Sunsail’s Agana Flotilla Manager

Flotilla sailing is one of those rare experiences that combines freedom and support in equal measure. You take the helm of your own yacht, plot your course through the Croatian coast, and still have a professional lead crew nearby to help with everything from moorings to restaurant bookings. For many, it’s the perfect balance, and for Sunsail, it’s a tradition that’s kept sailors coming back for decades.

To give you an inside look, we sat down with Mirna, flotilla manager at Sunsail’s Agana base, to hear what makes the experience so rewarding for guests — and why she thinks flotillas are the ideal way to explore the Adriatic.

What makes flotilla sailing so special?

“Definitely the support,” Mirna says. “The reason many guests start with a flotilla is because it takes the stress away, and they stay because it’s so much fun. Our team takes care of the tricky parts: weather tracking, route planning, getting in and out of the harbour, booking restaurants, even suggesting extra activities. Guests can relax knowing that everything’s handled. And if anything breaks on the yacht, our technician is just a call away. Boats have a lot of moving parts, so that extra peace of mind really helps.”

Is flotilla life more social, or do crews keep to themselves?

According to Mirna, the choice is yours. “People often find it’s easy to socialize, kids make friends, crews bond over shared experiences, and there are always lighthearted games or events along the way. But nothing’s ever compulsory. If someone wants more privacy, that’s always respected. Flotillas are about freedom as much as community.

How does the lead crew support guests?

“New sailors can expect a lot of reassurance,” she explains. “Skippers oversee maneuvers and will even park the boat for you if you feel unsure. We run daily briefings, so everyone knows the plan for the day, where to stop, where to meet, what to expect. Our hostess lines up activities and makes sure bookings are secured, which is a lifesaver in high season when berths fill up. And of course, having a technician nearby means you’re never left alone with a problem. Guests also love that fuel is included, no queuing at stations.”

What’s your favourite part of leading flotillas?

“For me, it’s seeing people enjoy themselves, bond with others, and learn something new,” Mirna says. “When guests pick up new sailing skills, discover Croatian customs, and then say they want to come back, that’s really rewarding.”

What surprises first-timers the most?

“Families are often surprised by the comfort and space onboard, especially how easy the heads are to use. Many also can’t get over how clean the water is and how beautiful the coastal towns are.”

What misconceptions do people have about flotillas?

“Some think we all sail out one by one in a group and stick together everywhere. Flotillas give you freedom, you sail on your own terms. The lead crew just makes sure you have guidance and organisation when you need it.”

Are flotillas suitable for mixed experience levels?

“Oh, absolutely. We’ve had yacht masters and complete beginners in the same flotilla. If someone is nervous, the team steps in to help. If someone wants more action, we might even set up a regatta. The whole idea is to adapt to the guests and make everyone feel comfortable.” .

Can you share a favourite hidden gem?

Mirna laughs: “If I told you, it wouldn’t be hidden anymore! But I will say we try to steer away from crowded places like the Blue Lagoon and instead tailor stops to the group, maybe a sandy beach for families with small children, or a cliff-jumping spot for adventurous friends.”

What advice would you give to someone considering their first flotilla?

“No need to overthink it,” she says. “Find a boat you like, reserve your spot, and trust your crew. Tell us what you enjoy, and we’ll help make it an unforgettable experience.”

Finally, what sets Sunsail flotillas apart?

“I can’t speak for other companies,” Mirna admits. “But our guests tell us it’s our teams that make the difference. The people here are passionate about sailing and about Croatia. They go the extra mile to deliver exactly what guests are hoping for — and that’s what keeps people coming back.”
