We have used a range of online search data, TripAdvisor reviews, information from official tourism boards, and geological data to rank destinations based on the following factors:
- Popularity – The more exposure on social media and the higher the volume of online searches related to sailing, the more exceptional the destination is.
- Sailing Grounds – How easy, smooth, and safe the sailing grounds are, ensuring a stress-free adventure where you can build your confidence and truly enjoy the view.
- Accessibility/Infrastructure – How easy the destination is to travel to and around, and how easily available local amenities are.
- Natural Beauty – How visually striking and distinctive the scenery is, capturing that ‘must be seen to be believed’ quality that stays with you long after the trip ends.
- Water quality/visibility – This measures the overall clarity, colour and quality of the water, because the better the water quality, the more incredible the swimming and snorkelling experiences can be.
- Landmarks & Cultural Significance – Whether the destination is home to iconic sights, historic sites, or has cultural relevance to give sailors a reason to visit beyond the scenery alone.
- Diversity of Activities – The range of experiences available beyond the sailing itself, from snorkelling and wildlife encounters to cultural excursions and local cuisine, ensuring every day on board brings something different.
Each criterion above was awarded a score from 1-5. Scores were combined to create an overall ranking out of 35 – the higher the score, the more suitable the destination is for beginners. Where destinations received the same overall score, online popularity was used as the tiebreaker.
