RYA GMDSS radio course
Overview
The RYA GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) radio course teaches students how to operate a GMDSS radio and how to carry out routine procedures and communications.
The syllabus covers communications with other vessels, harbour masters, coastguards, marinas and yacht clubs, with an assessment upon completion to test your understanding. Successful students will be awarded the RYA Short Range Certificate for VHF GMDSS.
This course is a theory course that takes place online, with an estimated duration of eight hours.

The Sunsail RYA GMDSS Radio course teaches the skills required to effectively communicate using a GMDSS radio. The course teaches the use of the low power, short range marine GMDSS VHF Radio, hand held or fixed type of vessel.
You will learn the correct procedure for VHF communication including routine procedures for communicating with other vessels, harbour masters, coastguards, marinas and yacht clubs.
The Sunsail RYA GMDSS radio course will consist of instruction and assessment, needed to attain the Short Range Certificate for VHF GMDSS.
Course destinations
The RYA GMDSS Radio Course is a one-day course held several times each year at Sunsail’s sailing school in Port Solent base on the South Coast of England.
