Earth Day: Sail Smart, Pack Smart

Earth Day: Sail Smart, Pack Smart

Earth Day is a reminder that the places we explore deserve protection. For those of us who experience the world by sea, it feels personal. Clear water, healthy reefs, quiet anchorages and thriving marine life are not just beautiful. They are essential to sailing.

At Sunsail, Earth Day connects directly to how we charter, how we travel, and how we think about the future of sailing. Through Our Ocean Promise, we are working to reduce impact across our fleet and bases. But responsible sailing is also about what you bring, how you travel, and the habits you build on board.

Planning your next sailing holiday? Here is how to make it more ocean friendly from day one.

Why Earth Day Matters to Yacht Charter

Earth Day has been celebrated every April 22 since 1970. It brings global attention to protecting our planet from pollution, habitat loss, climate change, and ocean degradation.

For a yacht charter company, this is not abstract. The health of marine ecosystems directly shapes the experiences we offer. Healthy coral reefs, protected coastlines and clean anchorages allow future generations to sail, swim, and explore the same waters.

Responsible boating is not complicated. It is about awareness and practical action.

1. Pack Reef Safe Sunscreen

Long days in the sun are part of the adventure. But certain sunscreen chemicals can damage coral reefs. Choose mineral based, reef safe sunscreen before your sailing trip. It protects your skin while helping protect the reefs you swim above.

Snorkeling over coral in the BVI or the Med feels different when you know you are not harming what you came to see.

2. Ditch Single Use Plastics

Plastic waste travels far. Often straight into the sea. Bring a reusable water bottle and avoid unnecessary single use items. Many Sunsail bases provide refill options, making it easy to stay hydrated without creating extra waste.

Less plastic means cleaner beaches and better anchorages for everyone.

3. Bring Soft Bags, Not Hard Cases

Life on board is active, space matters. Soft luggage is easier to stow, lighter to transport, and better suited to yacht living. It helps reduce travel weight and keeps cabins uncluttered.

Pack like a sailor, not like you are checking into a hotel.

4. Choose Biodegradable Toiletries

After a swim, a rinse. After a long sail, a shower.

Biodegradable soaps and shampoos break down more naturally and reduce impact on local water systems. It is an easy swap that fits naturally into responsible boating.

Small changes add up over a week on charter.

5. Travel Light, Live Free

You do not need much to sail.

Lightweight clothing reduces laundry loads; water use, and energy consumption on board. It also makes moving around deck easier when conditions pick up. Sailing has always been about freedom. Packing lighter is part of that mindset.

Our Ocean Promise in Action

Beyond what guests can do, Our Ocean Promise guides how Sunsail operates globally.

We are improving fleet efficiency, reducing waste across bases, supporting conservation partnerships in our destinations, and working toward long term carbon reduction.

We sail these waters every day. Protecting them is not optional; it comes with the territory.

Make This Earth Day Count

Earth Day is not about being perfect. It is about doing better.

Sail consciously. Respect wildlife. Leave anchorages cleaner than you found them. Choose products that protect reefs. Support destinations that protect their coastlines.

Do not just sail through these places, help protect them.

Don’t Just Sail. Sunsail.
