Overview
Since its inception in 1987, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta has grown to become Asia’s premier yacht racing event. Traditionally held in early December, the Regatta was conceived to honour His Majesty the King of Thailand’s 60th birthday.
Many years on and the event has grown from strength to strength, both in size and reputation. The King’s Cup now boasts an enormous contingent of keel boats, multihulls and traditional craft.
King’s Cup races are always hard fought affairs, although the atmosphere off the course is usually very relaxed and there is great camaraderie amongst participants. After each race, participants enjoy post race parties hosted by race sponsors. With drinks at crew-friendly prices and ample space to gather, the atmosphere of these post race gatherings is difficult to resist.

Background Racing Information
When racing, it is better to have a lower rating. This means that when you are taking part in the race, there will be less time added to your racing time. The higher the rating is; the more time that is added to your racing time. Charterers will obviously wish to have the lowest rating possible.
If the yacht has a furling mainsail, then their rating is lower, as, in theory, it takes longer to get around the course, whereas if they have a fully battened mainsail, the rating is higher as in theory the yacht will get around the course quicker.

Regatta Participation
If you are participating in a regatta kindly note the following:
- Charter Start/end: You must book the boat with sufficient time to move it from Ao Po Grand Marina to the area of the regatta taking into consideration the prohibition on night sailing and charter Start / End times. It is recommended that you go to the venue and register prior to charter start.
- Gennaker: We supply a standard charter sized downwind sail (gennaker) flown with the tack attached to the bow. Price is 1000 Baht per day. Spinnaker poles are not available as the yachts are not equipped to carry a spinnaker pole. You are not permitted to bring and use your own spinnaker/gennaker.
- Damage Waiver: You are required to take the normal insurance required to charter a yacht.
- Racing deposit: If you are entering a regatta and/or carrying a gennaker, this is considered racing, and the refundable deposit amount is Euro 5000.00 (cash or credit). This deposit covers any loss or damage caused during the racing period and will be returned once the yacht is handed back in a satisfactory condition.
- Regatta Fees: To be paid directly to the Regatta Organizer.
- IRC Certificate: This certificate is available from the Regatta Organizer, to be paid directly to the Organizer as well.
- Sail Numbers: The Regatta Organiser will supply a bow sticker with a number. // All the Sunsail 41’s have a sail number on the mainsail.
- Halyards: Foresail halyard tension is preset. Should you over tension the halyard you risk overstressing the roller furler swivel and could damage the foil. On return to base all foils will be checked as part of the debriefing.
