As always, it’s nice to get away and relax at one’s own speed & leisurely explore parts of the world we’ve not investigated before, on our own with nature & away from crowds etc!
We had a hugely enjoyable holiday and any comments about what might be done better are purely in the constructive-criticism folder, in order to improve things for others. The Team at Marina Zea were most helpful, though the engineer’s brief suggested the outboard engine fuel tap should be left on (with a very slowly dripping, polluting & nasty(downwind) engine smell), but we turned it off fairly soon – the Greeks, if evidence from many ferry funnels is anything to go by, have not yet addressed even the basics of de-carbonisation in larger engines!
There were a number of small snags with the boat, some we started with, without realising, others showed themselves later. Annoyingly, 4/5 door handles fell off with an annoying crash on a regular basis, and the tool bag didn’t have the right allen key I could use to satisfactorily tension the offending parts – the sharp crash of handles falling off were very un-nerving!
From a design point of view, putting large plates on the top shelf of a cupboard which is only protected by a magnetic catch, and opens laterally, means a tack in F5 found a couple of plates on the floor, one smashing. A roll of sellotape was bought to tape up the door subsequently, but not as good as other catch designs that are more positively locked. The lateral drawer had a similar problem, but the contents remained within, though it was difficult to slide it back in!
Interestingly, despite the relatively flat bottom and short keel, the boat sailed quite nicely, was comfortable and well appointed, the best we’ve seen for overall space in the last 8 years – the underfloor water&wine-rack being a real plus! On the downside, anchoring in any wind sees the hull flapping like a fishtail on the end of a hook. Trying to make way astern is seldom easy in these but this 41 was particularly interesting – likely relating to short keel, I feel. -
