Sea Trial: Sunsail 404

Chris Caswell

The way it usually works is that a charter company announces a new boat and then, one by one over a period of a year or so, those boats trickle into the fleets in dribs and drabs. But not Sunsail!

Sunsail announced that not one, but 32 of their new 404 catamarans would be at their charter bases, and right now!

Already delivered to the British Virgin Islands and Belize, the 404s will be in Thailand and St. Martin next month, with the Seychelles, Greece and Croatia bases having them ready at the start of their 2016 summer charter seasons.

The 404 is a brand-new Robertson and Caine built to meet Sunsail specs (as well as The Moorings, which will call it the Moorings 400) .

Whatever the label, this is one cool cat! First, it has four nicely sized staterooms with two heads. The brochures say it sleeps ten, but I don't care how comfortable the dinette is when made up as a double, it's a pain in the rear to make it up every night and then turn it back into a dining table in the morning. If you have to take your mother-in-law, she can stretch out on one side of the dinette. She's going to complain no matter what.

Forty feet is a really great size for a bareboat cat like this: it's easy to handle, fits into a lot of docks without problems and, with a draft of just 4 feet, you can get those good moorings right up next to shore. Yet it feels big and secure when you're offshore and away from land.
