Port Solent

Sunsail Match First 40s being treated in January

  Back to Waterlines

We interview Simon Boulding, Events Director at Sunsail, about our environmental updates of our Port Solent fleet.

Hi Simon! Thanks for talking to us this morning. We hear you have exciting news from The Solent about environmentally treating the fleet

We do! Being the proud owners of the biggest identical fleet of yachts in the UK, our Sunsail Match First 40s, we have the large task of currently taking all of them out of the water and treating them with antifoul. The difference being, we believe in maintaining our high levels of environmental awareness and have opted in for an antifoul that matches our criteria.

How does the antifoul help us become more environmentally friendly?

Well, we’re using something above and beyond the norm, called Micron WA. A protective layer is painted on the hulls which activates when in contact with water. The antifoul we’ve chosen uses far less copper in its production process than other brands, which is really important to us as copper is not considered eco-friendly. It also means that less copper is deposited into the environment when the boat retires. Furthermore, Micron WA also emits less Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions than other types of antifoul. VOC emissions are considered extremely damaging to marine life so anything we can do to limit this is an extremely positive thing.

Are we doing anything else to improve our environmental credentials?

Yes, lots! We are the only charter company in the UK to hold the prestigious ISO 20121 standard for Sustainable Event Management and possibly the only charter company in the world. It takes lots of thought, from recycling in our office and our new Go Paperless project to Green Blue day at Cowes Week and installing special low energy use lighting in our office. The reduction of environmental impact really is a central part of our daily lives. We also work closely with all of our suppliers to make sure they support our values and goals. Most are as proactive about it as we are which is really great to see.

Being the Sunsail Events Director, can you give us a taster of the events you’re most looking forward to in 2016?

So much is going on this season! I’m really excited about the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth in July, where Sunsail will be providing official on-the-water spectator packages to watch this electric, high speed event. Hoping, that we might be there to watch Ben Ainslie and his team Landrover BAR bring the America’s Cup home.

Furthermore, we have Cowes Week in August, which sees over 800 yachts racing every day. If you’ve never sailed there before, it’s a must! Sunsail is the official charter partner of Cowes Week and we are offering a number of packages to suit your needs, whether it is an individual spot on a boat, to whole boat chartering from one day plus. Plus there is the option to either race bareboat or with professional Sunsail crew, if you feel you require some support.

Those are just two examples of the 200 events we organise throughout the year. With Team GB heading for the medal table again this Summer at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, what better time to be in sailing.
