Known as the Granddaddy of Caribbean regattas, Antigua Sailing Week is one of the world’s premier sailing regattas. Held in late April/early May each year, this regatta for ocean going yachts attracts cruisers, racers and professional sailors from all over the world. 2016 marks the 49th annual event with a huge celebration being planned for the 50th Antigua Sailing Week in 2017. The regatta attracts100+ yachts annually, ranging in size from 24 feet to over 100 feet.

Antigua Sailing Week is sailed under the CSA Rating Rules and it comprises five days of competitive racing beginning on the last Sunday in April each year. Course lengths vary depending on boat speed and prevailing weather conditions but boats are generally on the water racing for three and not more than four hours daily. All racing is off the south coast of Antigua with the regatta’s administrative centre being located at Antigua Yacht Club.

No description of Antigua Sailing Week is complete without a mention of the famous social scene. Post-race prize givings take place at Antigua Yacht Club daily and are generally followed by bigger parties at the Yacht Club or in Nelson’s Dockyard. Midweek there is the famous Lay Day held on Pigeon Beach featuring the Nonsuch Bay RS Elite Challenge where spectators and competitors join in beach liming’ and a great variety of fun and games. The final awards presentation takes place in Nelson’s Dockyard on Friday after the last day of racing. Celebrations and dancing continue late into the evening, providing Antigua Sailing Week with a glamorous finale.
