Building on the foundations of Bareboat Chartering, Coastal Passagemaking (ASA 105 Coastal Navigation & ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising) is delivered in a 7 day package, just like our ASA 103/104 Course, Learn to Bareboat. We combine the 105 shore-based theory with a ‘real-time’ practical navigation classroom afloat: learning, reviewing and then performing plotting techniques daily, with an emphasis on underway practice. This course is a full navigation theory and practical classroom.
It is also an advanced yacht handling classroom. We focus on advanced sail theory, trim and shape, employing force diagrams to determine centers of effort, lateral resistance, gravity and buoyancy. We also include asymmetrical ‘cruising’ spinnaker usage as an extra option for those long down-wind reaches! As a night standard certification, we will perform all particulars of sail handling, maneuvering, contingency/emergency situations and navigation at nighttime as well.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the course is learning the basics of passage-making. We might circumnavigate the British Virgin Islands in a 12-24 hour non-stop sail, cross international borders to the US Virgin Islands or even to Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, all of which may be overnight. This requires additional planning and training aboard, in areas such as crew watch-keeping, coastal/offshore seamanship and yacht preparation, as well as customs/immigration procedures. This course is a challenge for all accomplished Bareboaters & Coastal Cruisers and a perfect primer for sailing to more exotic destinations found in our Sunsail Brochure.
It is fantastic! But it is tough, too, and a significant amount of ‘pre-course’ preparation is involved. All course materials are sent to you in advance as always, including ASA’s Coastal Navigation & Piloting training DVD, Text and Solutions (some Chapters are considered ‘homework,’ all is reviewed and practiced throughout).
Be assured that you are not meant to teach yourself the course- that is what we are here for! However, consider the fact that traditional navigation’s most challenging components aren’t the straight-forward arithmetic and geometry but diligent observation, self-awareness, record keeping and caution… of course, you already have a firm foundation in all of these from your pre-requisite ASA Learn to Bareboat Classroom.
Any sailing voyage is determined by numerous factors, not the least of which is weather; certain aspects of this course will depend on appropriate forecasts & conditions.
