Gocek Flotilla Sailing Vacation

Reviews

A fun, challenging and social holiday, but encounters with other large groups of noisy forgeiners might take the edge off it.

Overview - Give us a summary of your time with Sunsail?

Slightly underequiped lead crew (e.g. no handheld VHF) overcame all difficulties and could not do enough for the group. Slightly disappointed that there were few convenient beach stop off points. Only swam once.

On this particlar flotilla the re-fuelling on the last day of sailing proved to be problematical instead of ending with a high note. Also on this flotilla there was one skipper that stretched the patience of everybody. Oh, I am just being picky. It was a great holiday.

Yachts - What was the best thing about your yacht?

It was nearly new.

Tips - Do you have any advice for fellow Sunsail guests visiting this destination?

Few suitable stop off points for a swim.

Highlights - What were the most memorable experiences of your holiday and where on your itinerary did they happen?

Visiting a ruined (sacked) Byzantine settlement on an island off Karacaoren. To see this completely litter free site with no other tourists rubber necking was a uniquely evocative experience.

Wonderful sailing and overnight moorings in secluded bays and harbours made this a magical holiday.

A very friendly and helpful welcome from our lead crew got the holiday off to a great start. We had some wonderful sailing conditions and found the area around Gocek very beautiful and unspoilt. The boat was great and we were extremely well looked-after by George, our engineer. All in all we had a terrific time, met some lovely people, had fun and laughs over the day's adventures and really appreciated the joy of sailing in such beautiful surroundings.

It was great to socialise with the group at a group meal for the first two evenings but would have appreciated the opportunity for a quiet meal for two on the third night. I appreciate that this was led by the itinerary and we did enjoy the peace and authenticity of the small bays. We found the re-fueling stop at the end of the holiday very stressful - lots of tight manoeuvring and queuing - but I think that Sunsail may be looking into changing the system on that.

Yachts - What was the best thing about your yacht?

Easy to handle. It was lovely!

Take gloves for the 'lazy lines'.

Highlights - What were the most memorable experiences of your holiday and where on your itinerary did they happen?

Sailing across the water in a good force 5 on the last day - heaven! The beautiful sunsets - every evening. The charming and quirky restaurants with amazing views - especially Karacaoren!

A Great Holiday with something for everybody

Overview - Give us a summary of your time with Sunsail?

This was an even better holiday than we had with Sunsail in Greece (last year) and we found the islands of the Aegean even more unspoiled than those in the Ionian. People were friendly and accommodating and the lead crew was - even if a little pushed to cope with so many people - exemplary.

The yacht heads were smelly and the drain never cleared at all. The ladies therefore opted for showers ashore where possible. In addition, the outboard engines had seen better days and I believe that the old direct drive nature of them makes it dangerous when there are swimmers around.

Yachts - What was the best thing about your yacht?

Space - we geared up from a 32i last year to a 36i this and for 4 people that made all the difference. The kit was all in good order except for the heads !

1. Tie your dinghy on properly ! We lost ours on the first day and although the lead crew procured a new one 2 days in, we were delighted and impressed that a Gulet skipper had picked up the first and towed it back to base for the last day - Phew !!. 2. Don't forget this is a Moslem country, therefore the wailing from the minarets is really imposing in the early morning. Do they have to be that loud ??. 3. Don't get bumped on the flight back. We did and paid for it. The Easyjet equivalent to Thompsons was 3 hours late (meaning we were back in the early hours), leg-room was less and the meals were not included. We have been recompensed for the lounge costs incurred, but it did take the shine off the holiday.

Both Gocek and Fethiye were exciting and great stop-offs, however, Kapi Creek and Wall Bay did it for us. I have to say that the food everywhere was of a good standard, the families who ran the tavernas were attentive and we ate too much. I'm afraid that the 'few olives' we originally agreed at lunch times invariably turned into mezes and these were delightful.
