Sailing Conditions

The British Virgin Islands’ (BVI’s) location in the Lesser Antilles in the northeast Caribbean is one of the finest and most protected sailing areas on the planet. British Virgin Island sailing offers the opportunity for easy deep-water island hops between plentiful sheltered anchorages.

Steady, comfortable trade winds are from the north-east in winter, ranging from 15 – 25 knots, moving to the south-east in summer, ranging from 10 – 15 knots. There can be occasional strong ‘Christmas’ winds.

The tidal range is approximately 12 – 18 inches (30 – 45 cm). This is a destination for all sailors with some experience skippering yachts.
