As you fly in to Koh Samui be on the look-out for this famous golden landmark which can be seen from the skies. Big Buddha stands at more than 12 metres high on the little island of Koh Fan which is joined to the mainland by a causeway. Overlooking the aptly named Buddha Beach, this sparkling temple draws in pilgrims and tourists alike all year round.
Despite the statues popularity, the beach remains relatively quiet, offering a relaxing atmosphere on its fine sandy shore. Buddha Beach is ideally situated just to the west of Sunsail’s base at Bo Phut. The area is popular with those who don’t want to be right next to all of Koh Samui’s action, but not too far to take a short trip in. If you’re looking to fully relax, the renowned Ban Sabai Retreat Spa and Resort sits directly on the sand of Buddha Beach and offers an oasis of treatments. Alternatively, if you want the real Thai experience, you’ll find locals offering authentic Thai massages as you doze on your towel next to softly lapping waves.
Those who are there on a Sunday will have the opportunity to experience Buddha Beach’s Secret Garden Festival. For the last 13 years, Secret Garden Bungalows have put on live music performances while visitors enjoy a typical Thai beach BBQ which can be washed down with very reasonably priced drinks.
