Langkawi is fast establishing itself as a premier yachting destination and the Telega Harbor Marina is a testament to this. The marina was built on the former site of a small fishing village and still retains an ambience of peace and serenity, especially in the evenings. As well as the marina there are a number of bars, restaurants, shops, a bank and a post office all on site. It is probably best known as the base of Malaysian sailing legend Azaham Mansor, who became famous as the first of his countrymen to sail around the world. Today he has made his home on the island, because of the ready access to its excellent sailing conditions and the ever important laid back charm that is the essence of Langkawi.
The marina is actually managed by the legend himself, so keep an eye out for him. The sheltered harbor area is unpolluted and a variety of fishes can be seen in the clear waters. A daily shuttle service runs from the marina over to Koh Lipe , a small Thai island that forms part of the Turatao National Park, an island of outstanding beauty. Mount Mat Cincang dominates the scenery in this area and it is possible to get a cable car from Pantai Kok which will take you all the way up Langkawi’s second highest peak. You can pick up souvenirs along the way or at the base station depending on how steady your legs are by then!
