Sailing west from Neiafu harbor across the deep azure sea brings you to the magnificent island of Hunga.

Navigate your way around to the western shore where a pair of limestone cliffs flanks the entrance to Hunga Lagoon; here you’ll find stunning sandy beaches, a traditional Tongan village and one of the best anchorages to be found within the Vava’u islands.

This huge, almost landlocked lagoon was formed from the crater of an extinct volcano; now its emerald green waters offer some excellent land based fishing and the outer reef provides exciting snorkeling amongst the exotic and colorful marine life.

The deep waters just outside the lagoon provide a welcome haven to the visiting Humpback Whales, which arrive here between July and October every year. These majestic creatures are definitely a sight not to be missed.

Back inside the lagoon, take the opportunity to go ashore and visit the luxurious Ika Lahi Lodge, with its private sandy beach for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking and an a-la-carte restaurant serving up tasty freshly caught fish, it’s the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon. 

Before sundown, take the short stroll through the rainforest to Ika Lahi lookout, a cliff top viewpoint offering expansive vistas out across the open ocean. As the sun begins to set head back onboard for an evening cocktail and a peaceful nights sleep in this secluded and tranquil setting.
