The village of Spartahori in Spiglia Bay on the island of Meganissi is one of that places that you just have to visit on your Ionian sailing vacation. On the small beach there are a couple of tavernas popular with visitors. Porto Spiglia is always reliable with good fresh fish and various other local specialities.
The whitewashed village is perched on a hill overlooking the bay and the views out over the Ionian towards Nidri and the famous Onassis island of Skorpios are stunning. The village itself is a glimpse of what life was like in Greece in years gone by with narrow streets and a maze of whitewashed houses, tavernas and churches. It’s a ten minute uphill walk on a road that meanders through the olive groves from the port. It’s a climb that’s better embarked upon outside of the midday heat and with the incentive of a nice cold beer when you reach the top.
Nearby there are plentiful secluded coves that are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Abeliki Bay is one particularly lovely spot that will make you understand why the southern Ionian is so popular with honeymooners. There are numerous sea caves too, of which Papanikolis is the most well-known.
