Levkas Town is located at the northern end of the island of Levkas and a good stop over on a Levkas town boat charter, somewhere to stock up on provisions and enjoy a meal at one of the town’s many restaurants. The brightly painted houses of the town and its characteristic, earthquake-proof architecture make Levkas a distinctive-looking town.
Levkas is traditional in feel and visitors are guaranteed a warm and friendly welcome. The town has a rich cultural life and in August the Festival of Arts and Literature includes music, dance and theatre from all over the world with many of the performances taking place in the shadows of the Santa Maura fort as the sun sets. The fort dates from the thirteenth century and commands the main entry point to the island along the spit of land from the mainland with the sea on one side and the salt marsh on the other.
The Faneromeni monastery is situated here too and it is a pleasant spot to wander around when the festival is not on. A quiet place with picturesque views out over the sea and salt marshes. At one time, Levkas Town was the base of a local cigarette smuggling operation that picked up cigarettes in Albania and ferried them across to just outside Italian territorial waters but this was cracked down upon by the local police in the 1980s, leaving behind boatyards full of abandoned speed boats.
The marina is well-equipped and has a good range of bars and restaurants on site, but it is a pleasant walk around to the town from where you moor your Levkas Town yacht charter for a wander around the shops, most of which are located on the pedestrian friendly main street. There are the usual souvenirs but also some more interesting boutiques, along with art and jewelry galleries meriting a visit. The cafes and restaurants of the town square, half way along, are ideal for sitting and watching the world go by, glass in hand.
