Kioni is a small village and harbor just south of Ormos Frikes in the southeast of Ithaca, 25km from Vathy. You will recognize it from the three windmill towers on the end of Ak Psigadhi, at the southern entrance to the bay. The village is picturesque with an amphitheatre of tiled-roofed white-painted houses built around the deep blue waters of the bay. The steep hillsides behind the village are covered in olive groves and cypress trees.
In the past Kioni was a prosperous place that was home to over 1,000 inhabitants. Emigration to Australia and the US is responsible for a decline in population, as well as the earthquake of 1953, which destroyed the homes and villages of many locals. A few pre-earthquake houses remain, some of them dating back to the founding of the village in the 16th century.
These days, Kioni during the summer season is a convivial and modern resort with a many good cafes and tavernas catering to sailors on a Kioni Ithaca yacht charter.
