Gaios Paxos

Head south down the east coast of Paxos from Lakka and consider stopping at the picturesque miniature harbor of Logos on your way to Gaios, it’s a delightful spot. Logos is very much a traditional fishing village and much of the catch from its small fleet goes directly into the kitchens of the Island’s tavernas.

Gaios is the main harbor on the island, hidden behind the islet of Ay Nikolaos, and is where all the ferries and tripper boats arrive and leave from. In summer, it’s a bustling, busy spot with some attractive nineteenth century architecture that makes a worthwhile stop-over on a Gaios Paxos boat charter. The town square, surrounded by buildings on three sides and by the harbor on the fourth, is a hive of activity.

There are plentiful bars and tavernas, with Dodo’s and Mambo particularly recommended. The island of Ay Nikolaos that shelters the harbor houses a medieval fort and a chapel on its summit and there are pleasant walks to be taken through the olive groves that surround the town. Some of the olive trees on the island are so old and gnarled that they are said to date from the Venetian occupation and to still be bearing fruit, five hundred years later.

Mooring:

  • In high season, you would need to arrive by two or three pm to secure a berth on the town quay.
  • Mooring is stern or bows-to.
  • When crowded, look out for crossed anchors here.
  • There is a new quay in the north channel with more room – this is a quieter place to be and will suit those who like to be away from the hustle and bustle, but you need to remember that you will be dropping your anchor in quite deep water.

To Do:

  • Hire a motorbike to explore the island
  • Visit Paxos Cultural centre
  • Close to the port on Panagia islet, is the Assumption Basilica and Saint Nicholas Church
