Poros

Lively and cosmopolitan Poros – actually made up of two islands, Sferia (Poros Town) and Kalavria - is separated from the mainland by a narrow channel that is only 300 metres (330 yards) wide in places.  Poros Town has a busy waterfront offering all the usual souvenir shopping and refreshment opportunities – locals tend to head for the tavernas around the town square near the museum. The legendary Poseidonio night club is worth a visit if you think you can stand the pace – it opens in the early afternoon and keeps going until dawn.

Heading west from Poros Town, the coastline of Poros offers many delightful anchorages and beaches where you will want to stop on your Flotilla to Poros.  Megalo Neorio is a good beach with watersports facilities and a few good tavernas.  Monastiriou is quieter, with less in the way of organised activities, and the place to stop for an exploration of the eighteenth century monastery of Zoodhohou. The pine-forested interior of Poros is largely uninhabited but those who wish can hire scooters and admire the views from the island’s peaks.

Vayionia, a tiny harbour with a small beach, is the place to pull in if you are interested in visiting the sixth century BC Temple of Poseidon, where Demosthenes, committed suicide rather than surrender to the Macedonians after taking part in final resistance of the Athenians.
