Ermioni, on a rocky, wooded peninsula of the mainland, is an enchanting small fishing village where lemon and olive trees carpet the hills that lie behind. The waterfront is lined with bars, cafés and tavernas that will entice you to sit and take it easy for a few hours in the shade while you plan where you are going to sail to next on your Epidavros Flotilla. If you arrive in Ermioni on a Tuesday you will be able to stock up with provisions at the bustling market – take advantage of all the fabulous local fruit and vegetables, you’ll have no problem getting in your five a day in this part of the world as all the things that are good for you are just so tempting! Plus it’s always much more fun shopping in a market than it is in the supermarket back home.
Nearby, you might want to explore the island’s two doline craters – at Mikri Spilia you enter through a tunnel that leads down into the heart of the crater where there are two tiny churches built into the cliffs. If you have hyperactive people with you on your Hydra boat charter – or, in fact, if you are hyperactive yourself and find relaxation difficult – you could think about checking out the rock-climbing at Dhidhymo and Mount Ortholithi. Then again, you can always hit the coast on the southern side of the peninsula for a relaxing swim or a snooze on deck.
