From Kea, you will enjoy a wonderful open-water passage due east to the picturesque island of Syros.  Wooded and mountainous at its northern end and flatter and more populated to the south, Syros is deservedly popular with visiting charterers who will appreciate the numerous secluded anchorages and pretty harbors dotting the coast of the island – this is, after all, what Greek island hopping is all about: pulling in to a charming anchorage, taking a refreshing swim and then heading ashore to a local taverna for delicious food and wine.

Syros is the capital of the Cyclades, having been settled by refugees from the Greek Revolution in 1821. Its port, Hermoupolis, named after Hermes, the god of commerce and Greece’s primary maritime trading port in the past, is the capital of the Prefecture of Cyclades.  It is an elegant town –  Miaouli Square in the center is surrounded by grand buildings and nearby, the impressive Cultural Center houses the island’s Archaeological Museum and its collection of Cycladic art, metals and ceramics, many of which are more than 4,000 years old. There is also an Industrial Museum, should that take your fancy.

Hermoupolis is an important town in contemporary Greece and offers plenty in the way of sophisticated shops, great restaurants and beautiful churches. Elsewhere on the island, there are delightful small villages and secluded beaches to discover, either by road in a hire car or – for the energetic – via some of the island’s hiking trails. Along the western coast of the island, anchorages that you might visit on a Syros yacht charter include the bays at Megas Kakkos, Delfino and Kini. Finikas Bay on the southwest coast of Syros and Varis Bay on the southeast coast are two anchorages that offer a selection of good, authentic tavernas. The south coast of Galadaros Island also has a beautiful anchorage.

  • No moorings. Hermoupolis has an anchorage, but it is affected by the wash from visiting ferries. Finikas is a quieter anchorage alongside a traditional village. Dinghy dockage is generally available.
