Surrounded by gigantic golden-yellow cliffs, Leonidion is a prosperous and traditional market town in the eastern Peloponnese. Its harbor, also known as Plaka, is a delightful stop-over on a Leonidion yacht charter – somewhere to relax and enjoy a good meal at one of the waterfront tavernas. A 25-minute taxi ride from the harbor lies the spectacular monastery of Elonas, a white slash built into the sheer cliffs of the Dhafnon Gorge.
The small church is crammed with icons and lanterns and there is a small spring with water that's said to have curative properties. The monastery dates from medieval times; then was rebuilt after the War of Independence and became a convent in 1972.
