Tyrell Bay Carriacou

Carriacou is the largest of the Grenadine Islands, located eight miles south of Union Island. Tyrell Bay is the island’s most popular anchorage and boasts a terrific sandy beach as well as a few good beach bars and restaurants.  The pace of life on Carriacou is slow and some of the most enjoyable moments include kicking back with a glass of ‘Jack’, the local rum.

Lambie Queen has live music on Friday nights and The Old Rum Shop is another fun place, although its opening hours are erratic (might have something to do with the Jack). The Hallelujah Bar is located out on the water and will send a boat to pick you up from the jetty. The chicken wings and Carib beer come highly recommended! With several excellent dive sites close to each other, divers will be rewarded with sharks, turtles and eagle rays as well as myriad smaller fish to admire. There is good snorkeling too, making a Tyrell Bay Carriacou boat charter an excellent way to spend a lazy day or two en route from Petit St. Vincent to Sandy Island.

The locals are known for their boatbuilding and sailing skills and also for their proficiency in the Big Drum Dance, rooted in African tribal rituals. The dance is performed as a sign of respect for the ancestors and is often part of the launching ceremony for one of the large schooner boats that are built on the island. If you happen to coincide with a Big Drum Dance, you’re in for a good time! If you really must get some culture, the island’s museum is housed in a former cotton ginnery and has a small collection of local historic artifacts, including ancient maps and the island’s first telephone.
