The picturesque town of Soufriere on St Lucia’s south-western coast is a delightful stop-over. The town shares its name with the nearby dormant volcano. The Creole architecture of Soufriere is all gingerbread trim and overhanging balconies and the people are amongst the friendliest and most welcoming in the Caribbean. It is simply charming. The town offers some excellent shopping and a good selection of bars and restaurants, all worth spending a few hours exploring. Nearby The Pitons, the twin conical peaks of Petit Piton and Gros Piton, have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tower over the surrounding landscape.
Some of the best beaches in St. Lucia are nearby including Jalousie, Anse Chastenet and especially Anse Mamin. These are all wonderful places to spend a day swimming and snorkeling; then watch the sun go down, glass in hand. The snorkeling is fabulous too. Here, you can expect to see turtles, eels, extraordinary fish and spectacular coral.
Another sight worth visiting on your Soufriere yacht charter is the Diamond Botanical Gardens with its waterfalls, nature hikes and therapeutic sulphur springs lying in the crater of the volcano. You might also hike through the rainforest at Morne Fond St. Jacques, visit the Maho waterfalls and the famous Jalousie Plantation resort. Take a tour of a banana plantation or consider a rum-tasting tour to get a taste of the Caribbean’s most famous exports. Soufriere itself has a great range of eateries. Whether you’re in the mood for jerk chicken or fine dining, you will find something to suit everyone.
