Roseau is the friendly and colourful West Indian capital of the lush, green and mountainous island of Dominica, a member of the British Commonwealth, its streets lined with old stone and wood buildings. The city has a distinctive Rasta and reggae ambience and is laid out on a easy to navigate grid system, with most facilities clustered around the cruise ship dock.
Sights worth visiting on a Roseau Dominica boat charter include the Botanic Gardens with its Parrot Conservation Centre, from where you can hike to the top of Morne Bruce which overlooks the park and affords panoramic hillside views of Roseau and its surroundings. The Old Market is awash with souvenirs and handcrafts while the Public Market along the riverfront is the place to go for authentic local street-food and to stock up on produce and spices. Roseau was the birthplace of author Jean Rhys and the city’s museum plays tribute to the author of Wide Sargasso Sea as well as housing some interesting exhibits on Carib lifestyles, Creole culture and the slave trade.
A trip through the lush primordial interior of the island, with its proliferation of bird and animal life, to the Morne Trois Pitons National Park and the spectacular Trafalgar Falls, Boiling Lake and Titou Gorge is a must. The trekking here is exceptional, with plenty to challenge even the fittest walkers. Champagne Reef is the place to head to for serious diving and snorkelling, while the nearby village of Scotts Head has excellent seafood restaurants. Roseau itself has plenty of good eateries.
